Days 7&8 - June 16&17, 2009 - Eagle Plains to Dawson to Fairbanks

Gordon: We seem to be getting internet service every second day hence the postings every second day. We started up the Dempster Highway to Eagle Plains a couple of days ago; 370 km of gravel road. First 270 km was OK except for a little rain. The last 100 km was hell. We hit rain, high winds, and muddy greasy roads. Luckily, we made it thru to Eagle Plains with no mishaps but there were a few tense moments. We went for the Arctic Circle yesterday!!!! The ride out back to Dawson was much easier with dryer roads. 720 km of gravel roads in total.

Today, we toured around Dawson a bit and saw Dredger No. 4 that was used to dredge gold from the bottom of creeks and rivers. Then we hopped a ferry across the Yukon and headed up the Top of the World Highway. Beautiful scenery as the road followed the ridge of a mountain......a little testy with no guardrails. Crossed into Alaska at the most northerly border crossing between US and Canada. Then is was another 43 miles of crappy gravel to Chicken. Got to Delta Junction, the official end of the Alaska Highway. Then to Fairbanks where we got a motel room under the runway of the airport.......Mikes choice.

Mike and I are getting along surprisingly well. Although he makes the odd racial comment and has poor choices in motels.

Mike: Mike has gone to bed but he will make his rebuttals and post tomorrows report from Anchorage.
